ABOUT BURLEIGH JUNIORS

Our club was first formed in 1967. At that time there were only 2 Junior Clubs, Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah, and then with
Burleigh Heads it became a three club competition. Our home ground was Rudd Park back then, with the Senior Club.
Players were categorised by weight not age as it is today.

Frank Knox was the first President with Robin Gilbank, an ex 'A' Grade Valleys player, as Secretary. Committee members included
Barry Newman and "Butch" Smith.

John Thomas was elected President the followiing season and completed a four year term in office before handing the reins to
John Bayly of the now steadily growing club.

Bob Singh was Senior Club President and between the two clubs a plan was devised to obtain Government subsidy and with
co-operation from Gold Coast City Council, the two clubs moved to the Pizzey Park complex. Shortly after, the Junior Club was granted the Twin Fields where they are now and, once again, with the help of Bob Singh the amenities block was built.

Field lights on number one field were installed in 1986, made possible by the Pizzey Park Development Committee. This committee had been formed earlier to foster progress on the Pizzey Park grounds.

The popularity of Rugby League has generated much interest amongst parents and kids alike thanks to the input of many players who, having reached their potential in the game, have returned to the grass roots level to pass on their skills and expertise. Much thanks also must go to parents who dedicate their time to the efficient running of the club to achieve the success it is today.

Today our club has approx 670 players and many dedicated coaching and training staff, all skilled in teaching sportsmanship and competitiveness much needed in sport as well as everyday life.

Our thanks go to those people who provided the base to build on way back in 1967, and through the following seasons to present club members. However, I'm sure if you asked them why they did it the reply would be as a past President said recently,
"I wouldn't have done it if I didnt like it".

We are the largest and most financial club on the Gold Coast, and also one of the largest  in Queensland. The Burleigh Bears is also the only club on the Gold Coast where the juniors have a direct career pathway into the Intrust Super Cup and NRL. Over the years the juniors have managed to produce numerous Q Cup, NSW Cup, NRL and Super League players.
